The Scimitar-class Heavy Fighter is a single-seat Olarian heavy fighter manufactured by Raiden Assault Craft. Designed around concentrated firepower and survivability, the Scimitar carries heavier armor and stronger shielding than most fighters of comparable size while retaining enough acceleration to perform interception and strike missions.

Its combination of heavy laser cannons, rapid-fire weapons, and a pair of powerful seismic missiles gives the class substantially greater destructive capability than a conventional multirole fighter. In Olarian service, the Scimitar is commonly used where a smaller fighter is expected to engage unusually durable targets without requiring a full assault bomber.

Design and development

The Scimitar reflects Raiden Assault Craft's characteristic preference for heavily armed, compact combat spacecraft. At only ten meters in length, the fighter is smaller than the Kaden-class Fighter but devotes a much larger proportion of its mass to armor, shielding, weapons, and power systems.

The resulting craft is unusually durable for its size. Heavy hull armor protects the pilot and critical machinery, while 200 SBD of shielding allows the Scimitar to absorb considerably more punishment than lighter interceptors. This protection comes at the expense of atmospheric speed and some maneuverability, giving the fighter a noticeably heavier handling character than more lightly built Olarian designs.

The class was intended to fill the gap between ordinary starfighters and dedicated bombers. Rather than carrying a large ordnance load, the Scimitar concentrates considerable destructive power into a very small number of weapons and relies upon armor and shielding to survive long enough to deliver them.

Performance and systems

The Scimitar is capable of approximately 3,500 G of acceleration, or 17.3 MGLT/s. This gives it acceleration comparable to the Kaden despite its substantially heavier construction, though its greater mass and compact layout make it less agile during rapid changes of direction.

Maximum atmospheric speed is approximately 1,260 kilometers per hour under normal conditions. The class is fully capable of atmospheric operation and uses repulsorlifts to assist during takeoff, landing, and low-speed maneuvering, but its dense construction and relatively high wing loading make it less naturally suited to atmospheric combat than lighter multirole fighters.

A Class 1.5 hyperdrive permits independent deployment without continuous carrier support. As with most Raiden designs, propulsion and power systems are engineered around supporting the fighter's weapons and defenses rather than maximizing cruising efficiency.

Armament

The Scimitar carries two heavy laser cannons and two rapid-fire laser cannons. The heavy weapons provide strong direct-fire capability against transports, bombers, fortified targets, and vulnerable sections of capital ships, while the rapid-fire cannons are better suited to engaging starfighters and other maneuvering targets.

Two wing hardpoints normally carry one Seismic missile each. These weapons constitute the fighter's primary heavy-strike capability and are intended for use against targets too well protected for ordinary fighter weapons.

The limited missile capacity distinguishes the Scimitar from more flexible designs such as the Kaden. Rather than carrying a broad selection of ordnance, the fighter is intended to deliver a small number of extremely powerful attacks before relying on its guns for the remainder of an engagement.

Operational use

The Scimitar is used primarily for heavy interception, escort, strike missions, and attacks against capital ships or hardened installations. It is particularly effective against bombers, gunships, transports, and other targets whose durability can make them inefficient targets for lighter fighters.

In fleet combat, Scimitars are often deployed in smaller numbers than general-purpose fighters. Their heavy weapons and protection make them valuable for breaking up bomber formations, attacking vulnerable capital-ship systems, or reinforcing portions of a fighter screen facing unusually durable opponents.

The class is less well suited to prolonged dogfighting against highly agile interceptors. Scimitar pilots instead rely upon strong acceleration, heavy defensive systems, and superior firepower to force short engagements in which the fighter's ability to inflict and absorb damage becomes decisive.

This emphasis makes the Scimitar representative of Raiden Assault Craft's broader design philosophy: compact spacecraft built to bring disproportionately heavy weapons and protection to a specific combat role rather than attempting to perform every mission equally well.
