The Arcturus-class Transport is a small Olarian transport and shuttle manufactured by Terran Shipwright. Intended for routine personnel and cargo movement, the Arcturus combines strong straight-line performance, moderate protection, and a fast hyperdrive with a relatively conventional modern systems layout.

Unlike older atmospheric transports such as the Levian-class Dropship, the Arcturus was designed around the assumption that reliable repulsorlift technology would be available throughout its service life. It therefore dispenses with elaborate lift fans, rotating engine pods, and other mechanical VTOL systems in favor of a simpler and more compact repulsorlift-supported configuration.

Design and systems

The Arcturus was developed as a general-purpose light transport capable of operating between capital ships, orbital installations, and planetary surfaces. Its thirty-meter hull provides substantially more internal space than smaller shuttles while remaining compact enough for routine hangar operations aboard most major Olarian warships.

The vessel normally carries a crew of three and approximately sixteen passengers, with military configurations commonly accommodating around twelve fully equipped troops. Passenger seating and cargo fittings may be rearranged for freight, medical evacuation, technical teams, or other specialized duties.

Approximately twenty metric tons of discretionary mission cargo can be carried under normal conditions. This does not include fuel, provisions, maintenance stores, or equipment considered part of the vessel's standard operating load.

The class relies heavily upon repulsorlifts during takeoff, landing, hovering, and low-speed atmospheric flight. Unlike older Olarian transports, the Arcturus possesses no fully independent mechanical VTOL system and would be severely limited if its repulsorlifts failed while operating near a planetary surface.

Performance

The Arcturus is capable of approximately 1,800 G of acceleration, or 8.9 MGLT/s, and a maximum atmospheric speed of approximately 1,043 kilometers per hour under normal conditions.

Its straight-line performance is considerably better than that of larger battlefield transports such as the Levian. The class is nevertheless not considered especially maneuverable, particularly in atmosphere. Its flight characteristics favor stable, predictable transit over the aggressive low-speed maneuvering expected of dedicated dropships.

Repulsorlifts provide most of the vessel's low-speed control, allowing the Arcturus to hover, land vertically, and maneuver within confined docking areas without requiring large moving propulsion assemblies. This greatly simplifies maintenance and internal arrangement compared with older VTOL designs.

A Class 1.0 hyperdrive gives the Arcturus unusually good strategic mobility for a vessel in its role and allows it to carry passengers or cargo between systems without carrier support. This capability has made the class especially popular for liaison, courier, and administrative transport missions.

Defensive systems and armament

The Arcturus carries approximately 200 SBD of shielding and medium hull armor rated near 90 RU. Its defenses are intended to protect the vessel from limited weapons fire and environmental hazards rather than allow it to survive prolonged combat.

Two forward-facing heavy laser cannons provide substantial firepower against light spacecraft, vehicles, and surface targets. A retractable laser turret covers the rear and upper approaches and is primarily intended for defense against pursuing starfighters.

Although relatively well armed for a transport, the Arcturus is not intended as an assault craft. Its weapons provide enough protection to discourage opportunistic attacks or support an emergency extraction, but heavily contested landing zones are normally left to purpose-built vehicles such as the Raider-class Heavy Gunship or Aurora-class Landing Craft.

Operational use

The Arcturus is widely used as a general-purpose naval and government transport. Typical missions include passenger transfer between vessels, movement of officers and specialists, light cargo transport, courier work, medical evacuation, and routine planetary shuttle service.

Its fast hyperdrive and relatively high acceleration make it particularly useful when personnel or equipment must be moved quickly without committing a larger vessel. Compared with the Aster-class Aerodyne Shuttle, the Arcturus offers greater capacity and protection, while the Aster retains superior redundancy for operations where repulsorlifts cannot be relied upon.

The Arcturus and Levian therefore occupy complementary rather than competing roles. The Levian is optimized for battlefield insertion, rough-field operations, and atmospheric maneuverability, while the Arcturus is a faster and simpler transport intended for normal fleet and planetary logistics.

This combination of moderate capacity, strong performance, and straightforward maintenance has made the Arcturus one of Terran Shipwright's more common utility spacecraft.
